Today, my friend Joyce posted on her blog about her issues with winter skin. Now, I’m not sure I believe her completely, as she is currently living in Southern California, but we’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.
Here is how I’m surviving in the mid-Atlantic. I wish I had been doing all of this in college, when I was trekking out in the wilds of Madison, WI.
And I know after yesterday, you were hankering for another bootleg graphic.

In any case, here is my current arsenal:
1. Coconut oil is the star of the show. When I get out of the shower, I towel dry briefly and slather on a layer from the neck down. It takes a while for it to soak in, so I put on my robe while I finish getting ready and let it do its magic. I have never been so not-scaly in winter before!
Before bed, I rub a generous amount into my face, and then hold a hot washcloth over my face for about a minute, sealing all the moisture in. At that point, I wipe off the excess oil and any make-up comes with it. I know the idea of using heavy oil on your face can be frightening, especially if you, like me, sometimes have issues with oiliness. But!! I have had far fewer break-outs and oily patches since I started using it. I think it is a pretty restorative skin option.
2. After this night coconut oil cleansing, I often follow-up with a quick swipe of Aesop B and Tea Balancing Toner, which is gentle and clarifying, especially if I’m having an emerging break-out. This stuff was a splurge for me, but it does the “balancing” job well on my combination skin.
3. In the morning, I skip the coconut oil on the face and use a gentle cleanser on my face. Right now, I’m using an Aveeno brightening cleanser, but I’m not a loyalist. After cleansing, I use pure witch hazel as my toner. It’s gentle, clarifying, and cheap.
4. I follow the witch hazel with Josie Maran light argan oil. This stuff is the. bomb. It smells good, it goes on with little residue, and it is SUPER moisturizing – I only use a few drops at a time. I’m a big fan of argan oil – I use an argan-based oil from Davines on my hair – and love rubbing any residue into my hands and cuticles.
5. I am also a big fan of the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer. It’s light on my skin, evens out any redness, and has SPF. I prefer the original version to the oil-free version, which feels a bit heavier and isn’t as moisturizing. In the summer, I often will just use this (with maybe two drops of the light argan oil mixed in) as my base.
As a former Birchbox addict, I am a huge fan of samples, as well, so I am not a complete loyalist to this process. I have a collection of samples of masks, serums, CC creams, acne treatments, etc etc, that I will dip into occasionally, but these are the products I come back to again and again. Many of them last for a long time, too – I bought the Josie Maran oil last winter and I am still using the same bottle — same with the tinted moisturizer and witch hazel. So for me, it’s been worth the upfront cost that some of them pack.
What has been working for your winter skin? Any recommendations?
And, what eye creams do people like?! I’ve tried Origins Ginzing and Benefit It’s Potent, but I need a new one, and I don’t feel called to use either of them again.
